Complications of Laser Systems Used in Epilation Treatments
Laser epilation is a safe method widely used to permanently reduce unwanted hair. However, if the application is not performed by experts and with the right devices, some complications may develop. These complications usually occur due to excessive absorption of laser energy by epidermal melanin. This risk is higher especially in dark-skinned individuals (Fitzpatrick Type III-VI) and tanned skin.

Laser Systems Used
Alexandrite (755 nm)

Diode (810 nm)

Nd:YAG (1064 nm)

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL, 650 nm)

Argon and Ruby lasers were used in the past but have been abandoned today due to the risk of complications.

Factors Affecting Complications
Skin type (especially dark skin)

Application area (risk increases in sun-exposed areas such as face and arms)

History of sun exposure

Season (higher complication rate in summer months)

Complications
1. Acute Side Effects (Hours - Days)
Transient Erythema and Perifollicular Edema: Normal and an indicator of treatment effectiveness.

Pain: Mild, reduced with cooling systems.

Superficial Burns: May develop after leaving hair long or using inappropriate doses of energy.

2. Transient and Subacute Complications (Weeks - Months)
Postinflammatory Hyperpigmentation / Hypopigmentation: Increases especially after sun exposure. Generally temporary.

Cold Urticaria: Rare allergic reactions to cooling systems.

Folliculitis: More common in areas previously waxed and when oily creams are used.

3. Serious and Rare Complications
Burn and Scar Formation: Higher risk in individuals with incorrect dosage and bronze skin.

Premature Whitening (Leukotrichia): Depends on melanocyte damage; may be reversible or permanent.

Parodoxal Hypertrichosis: Occurs between 0.6-10%. There may be an increase in hair around the area treated with Alexandrite and IPL lasers in particular.

Recommendations for Skin Health in Laser Epilation
Sun protection is very important before and after the application.

The procedure should not be performed with bronze skin.

Hair length should not be longer than 1-2 mm.

The epilation procedure must be performed under the supervision of a dermatologist or experienced physician.
