Continuing cognitive activities such as solving puzzles, reading a book, and learning a new language helps maintain the integrity of brain functions. Age-related brain functions are less likely to be lost in people with higher education levels. Education can delay the onset of the disease for several years, with the spare mental capacity it provides in the brain. Vascular risk factors such as arteriosclerosis, stroke, hypertension, high cholesterol, diabetes, high homocysteine in the blood, chronic alcoholism, obesity and smoking increase the risk of dementia in older ages. Therefore, identification and treatment of vascular risk factors in middle age may reduce the risk of Alzheimer's. Living alone, not being in social relationships, and depression both increase the risk of dementia and lead to earlier death. People who follow the Mediterranean diet frequently have a lower risk of Alzheimer's Disease and the rate of destruction in mental functions. This risk reduction is due to excessive consumption of fish, fruits, vegetables and unsaturated fats in the diet.
