Mole Burning After Laser Epilation: Why Does It Happen and What Should Be Done?
Laser epilation is an effective method for getting rid of unwanted hair. However, in some cases, reactions such as a burning sensation on the skin, irritation or darkening, crusting or burning formation especially on moles may occur. So, what causes mole burning after laser epilation and what should be done in this case?

Effect of Laser Epilation on Moles
Laser epilation devices target hairs using intense light energy absorbed by the melanin (color pigment) in the skin. However, since moles also contain high levels of melanin, they can absorb the laser light and overheat, causing the following conditions:

Burning or irritation: When the laser beam hits the mole directly, the cells in the area can be irritated by being exposed to excessive heat.
Crusting or peeling: A burned mole can crust over and fall off on its own within a few days.
Dark color change: A mole exposed to the laser beam may become darker or show a temporary color change.
Inflammation or infection: Depending on the degree of burn, inflammation or swelling may occur around the mole.

For this reason, it is very important to evaluate and protect the mole before having laser hair removal.

What Should Be Done to Prevent Mole Burning After Laser Hair Removal?
Moles Should Be Protected Before Laser Hair Removal:

Before the application, the mole should be covered with a white pencil or covered with special protective tapes.
If there are many moles or large and swollen moles, a dermatologist should be consulted.
Moles Should Be Observed After Laser Hair Removal:

If there is a significant change in shape, abnormal growth or irregular edges in the mole after laser treatment, it should be examined by a dermatologist.
In cases of sudden darkening, bleeding or crusting, a doctor should be consulted.
Burning and Irritation Relief Care Should Be Applied:

A cold compress or soothing products such as aloe vera gel can be used to relieve the burning sensation after laser treatment.
If there is crusting or peeling on the skin, it should definitely not be peeled or scratched.
If the burning sensation continues, products such as Bepanthen, Hametan or silver-containing burn creams may be recommended.
Sun Protection is a Must:

Since the skin will be sensitive after laser hair removal, moles in particular should not be exposed to sunlight.
Using 50+ SPF sunscreen can prevent moles from darkening and spots from forming.
Are There Permanent Changes in Moles After Laser Hair Removal?
In most cases, darkening, crusting or peeling of moles after laser hair removal is temporary. However, if there is a significant change in the structure of the mole, i.e.:

✅ If the edges of the mole become irregular
✅ If there is a rapid increase in size
✅ If the color change is abnormal and permanent
✅ If the mole starts to bleed

It is recommended to consult a dermatologist.
