Topical Treatments for Scars
Our skin can be damaged for various reasons such as trauma, surgery, burns or acne. The scars that form in these cases (cicatrices) are not only aesthetic; they can also cause physical and psychological discomfort. In our polyclinic known for laser applications in Ankara, we successfully apply modern topical treatment methods to reduce the appearance of scars and support skin health.
Why Do Scars Form?
The wound healing process is a complex process. During this process, while tissue repair is carried out, in some cases, excessive scar tissue, which we call keloids or hypertrophic scars, may form. Such scars do not disappear over time, they can even grow.
What is Used to Reduce Scars?
✅ 1. Onion Extract (Allium Cepa)
This content, found in products such as Mederma and Contractubex, helps to lighten the appearance of scars by reducing vascular formation (angiogenesis). It plays a supporting role in preventing keloids that may occur especially after surgery.
✅ 2. Vitamin E (Tocopherol)
It fights free radicals in the skin thanks to its antioxidant properties. However, since it is not effective enough on its own, it is generally recommended to use it with silicone gel sheets.
✅ 3. Vitamin A (Retinoic Acid)
It supports skin renewal by supporting collagen production, especially in atrophic (collapsed) scars. Retinoids also soften and smooth the skin texture.
✅ 4. Vitamin D (Calcipotriol)
It supports wound healing by preventing the uncontrolled proliferation of cells (keratinocytes) in the skin. However, its effect is still in the research phase.
✅ 5. Topical Corticosteroids
It reduces inflammation and reduces redness, itching and scar thickness. It is especially effective in short-term use in keloid treatment.
Combined Treatment with Laser
In our polyclinic, we combine topical treatments with advanced laser applications. With this method, we both reduce the appearance of the scar and increase the quality of the skin tissue. We offer personalized laser + topical treatment protocols for our patients in Ankara.
What to Consider in Scar Treatment?
Each scar is different. When creating a treatment plan;
Age of the scar
Skin type
Type of scar (hypertrophic, atrophic, keloid)
The patient's expectations should be taken into consideration. I personally make this assessment in our clinic as a specialist dermatologist.
Conclusion
Scars are not your destiny. You can safely treat your scars by combining the power of laser and topical methods in Ankara. Early intervention in scar treatment brings more successful results.
