What Causes Ingrown Nails and How Is It Treated?

Ingrown nails are a common problem that negatively affects daily life. They can cause pain while walking or wearing shoes and can lead to infection if left untreated. So, what causes ingrown nails and how is it treated?

Causes of Ingrown Nails:
Improper Nail Cutting: Cutting nails too short and oval can cause them to sink into the skin as they grow.
Narrow or Inappropriate Shoes: Shoes that are tight and do not allow air in can cause nails to press on the skin and cause them to ingrown.
Not Paying Attention to Foot Hygiene: Constantly keeping the feet moist can cause the nail tissue to soften and easily ingrown.

Genetic Predisposition: Some people may have a congenital predisposition to nail structure. If there are family members with ingrown nails, the risk is higher.
Impact or Trauma: Impacts to the foot or pressure applied to the nail bed can cause ingrown nails.

Symptoms of Ingrown Nails:
pain and tenderness at the edge of the nail
swelling and redness in the ingrown nail area
inflammation and discharge in case of infection
increased discomfort while wearing shoes or walking
if ingrown nail is noticed at an early stage, it can be cured with home measures. However, in advanced cases, medical intervention may be required.

What are the Treatment Methods for Ingrown Nails?
Methods that can be applied at home: In mild cases, washing the feet with warm water and antiseptic solutions, placing cotton or special pads on the ingrown nail area can relieve the pain.
Topical Antibiotics: If an infection has occurred, antibiotic creams recommended by the doctor can be used.
Wire and Splint Applications: Specially designed wire or splint methods can be used to reduce pressure on the nail bed.
Partial Nail Removal: If the ingrown nail is advanced and has become chronic, the doctor may surgically remove a portion of the nail.
Total Nail Removal: In very advanced cases, in cases of recurring ingrown nails, the entire nail may need to be removed.

Ways to Prevent Ingrown Nails:
cutting nails straight and not too short
Wearing comfortable and breathable shoes that do not pinch the feet
Paying attention to foot hygiene, keeping feet dry and clean
Taking proper care of the nail structure and ensuring regular check-ups in people who are prone to ingrown nails
ingrown nails can cease to be a serious problem if precautions are taken at an early stage. However, if neglected, infection may develop and the treatment process may become more complicated. If ingrown nails recur frequently or if there is inflammation, consulting a specialist will be the healthiest solution.
