What is Heat Rash (Miliaria)? How is it Treated?
Miliaria is a common skin problem that occurs as a result of the blockage of sweat glands in hot and humid weather conditions. It is also known as "heat rash" among the public and is more common especially in babies and individuals who sweat excessively.
What Causes Miliaria?
Blockage of sweat ducts due to excessive sweating
Hot and humid environments
Tight and non-breathable clothing
Patients who stay in bed for a long time (e.g. intensive care patients)
Miliaria Types and Symptoms
Miliaria crystallina (superficial heat rash): Appears as small, transparent and water-filled blisters, does not itch.
Miliaria rubra (red heat rash): Appears as red, itchy and sometimes burning blisters.
Miliaria profunda: It is a rare form that reaches deeper layers, usually recurs, and occurs as hard swellings under the skin.
How Can Precautions Be Taken?
Avoid hot and humid environments.
Wear loose, cotton and breathable clothes.
Keep your skin clean and dry after sweating.
Change clothes frequently for babies and do not overdress them.
Treatment Methods
Mild cases will resolve on their own.
Cold compresses and cooling lotions provide relief.
You can use moisturizers that do not irritate the skin.
If there is itching, antihistamine creams or mild corticosteroids may be applied with the advice of a doctor.
Infected cases may require antibiotic treatment.
Conclusion
Miliaria is generally not a serious disease and can be prevented with appropriate precautions. However, itching and irritation can negatively affect quality of life. Caution should be exercised especially in babies and chronic patients, and a dermatologist should be consulted in severe cases.
